Happy 2017… and no, 2016 was not the #worstyearever

Well yes many people who we don’t know but feel like we do passed away, there were riots and shootings, the president-elect wasn’t exactly everyone’s choice and there were many terrorist  attacks. Too many that I’ve lost count. Even so; it’s not the worst year ever. In fact, we have it pretty good compared to people and what they went through not too long ago. We at least have the luxury of sitting in our beds watching A New Hope in our Care-Bear onesie typing on our iPads, eating chocolate chip cookies and, well, you get the point.

I want to point out some positive things that happened this year all around the world! There are good things happening every single day. We need to focus more on the positive. I know it’s tough because most of the news we are given is negative and biased, but there are good things happening and good people out there. Whining doesn’t help and we can’t have everything we want in life. It’s not always going to go your way. Just remember, we only live once, so let’s make the best of this.  Here are some positives things I found.

🔹Region of the Americas is Measles  free! What? Are measles something we were worried about? Well, a little. There were a few cases in 2015 but thanks to vaccines, we are all clear! It took 22 years of hard work to achieve that goal.

🔹Remember the ice bucket challenge? Well a few years back everyone was getting splashed with buckets of water to raise money for ALS. Good news. That’s money helped! They haven’t found a cure yet but have made a major discovery leading them in that direction.

🔹Since 2000; the ozone layer has shown signs of heeling and has closed a bit. This proves that banning the use of the chemicals in aerosol cans etc, has helped.

🔹For those who care about the Dakota Access pipeline; a victory was won and the construction the pipeline was stopped due to the efforts of many who stood up for what matters to them.

🔹 A peace treaty was made in Columbia.

🔹The panda is no longer on the extinct list!

🔹The numbers of tigers are on the rise.

🔹A vaccine for Ebola was developed.

🔹Sea world will stop breeding captive killer whales.

🔹Nasa’s Juno spacecraft reached Jupiter.

🔹California is powering over 6 million homes with solar power.

🔹 Bank firm will pay for college tuition for children of the employee victims of 911.

🔹ROUGE ONE was released.

Those are some positive things right? i know there are many more and I do see stories on social media that are positive. Sometimes. People still have to make their negative comments though. Let’s try to be more positive this year and nicer to people. People act like they care so much about people around the world etc but can care less about their neighbor. They probably don’t even know their name. Let’s try to change that. We need to stick together.

More bounce to the…

What’s the first thing you do when you get home ladies? Take off your bra right? I noticed over the past few years how painful wearing a bra really has become; mainly in the rib cage area. I read that I probably have rib cage flares, which many women have. Ok fine but it hasn’t always been this way. It’s becoming more painful as I age. So that got me thinking. why do we need to wear bras? Do we really need to? Why do I have to be in pain?

I remember in the summer before 7th grade, my stepmother dragged me over to the hallway mirror in the entry way of my dad’s house, stood behind me, grabbed me by my shoulders and said “see those, do you see those little things?!” You need to start wearing a bra.  As I looked at myself in the mirror, wearing my pink top with a little apple decal; my face began to look like the apple on my top because I was so embarrassed. I was already a shy kid so this was a bit much for me.  Going to the store to pick out the new bra was even worse. Trying to put it on alone in the bathroom was even worse than that. I remember being so pissed off and frustrated; even at a young age. Why do I have to go through this I asked? Because you need to “train” your breast. Train them for what? Are they going to be in the Olympics in a breast bouncing competition? At that age I didn’t even have anything to hold up. So the question is; why start wearing a bra as a child? What could that possibly do for you? Obviously one reason is so little boys won’t make fun of you but I’m talking about medically. Does a bra do your body good?

I understand that because we as a society, have been wearing them for so long now, that we believe we HAVE to. Where did that information come from? My doctor has never said anything about the health benefits or wearing a bra. In fact, it’s never been discussed. Well since national no bra day is coming up on October 13th , I thought I would talk about this and see what people had to say. I wish it was no bra every day.

Of course I’m not an expert on anything but I read many studies that have been done about how NOT wearing a bra can be beneficial and it seems to make a lot of sense to me. The main finding which I’m sure everyone would agree with is wearing a bra does absolutely nothing for “sagging breasts.” The very reason we are told to wear them in the first place. Remember? For “training.” If that were true, most older women would have firm, non sagging breasts right? Then you wouldn’t have to wear a bra when you got older. If the whole point of starting to wear then at a young age to train them for not sagging but it’s not true, why we do we torture ourselves! Research actually shows the opposite effect. Not wearing a bra can increase more muscle tone and supporting breast tissue.  Wearing a bra most of your life can actually make them sag more. Think about it. It makes sense. You would build muscle since your breasts will be able to move.

For me personally, finding a bra that fits me correctly and is comfortable at the same time, is very rare if not impossible. I’ve tried. I would love if we didn’t have to wear them at all and be free! Yeah yeah I know…what about the nipple?! I wish it wasn’t such a big deal either since every human has them. I mean I don’t think we as women need to walk around topless or anything but on the other hand what’s wrong with a little nip? Can people not control themselves? They didn’t wear bra’s on Three’s company! Why are we going backwards? There is a good comprise though if you’re not comfortable going bra-less just yet and it’s called the bra-lette. It’s a good in-between bra. No they won’t push your boobs high up into round ball shapes but they’ll give a little lift and a little coverage for your nips so you don’t feel too naked and you won’t have to the of under-wires and feel so restricted. Technically, yes I know you breast look “better” in a certain shape but I feel that’s just because that’s what we are used to seeing. Or try a camisole or nipple covers if that’s what concerns you.

I’m not going to say everyone should stop wearing a bra. Do what’s right for you. Maybe you could try not to wear one as much as possible and see how you feel. It may feel weird at first but the more you don’t wear one; the better it will feel once you get used to it. Oh and if you feel like being even more adventures, visit one of these cities in the US and feel free to walk around topless! That’s right there are 12 cities where being completely topless is legal and you can literally walk around with no top. Just saying. These free boobing cities are Asheville, NC, Austin, TX, Boulder, CO, Columbus, OH, Eugene, OR, Honolulu, HI, Kenne, NH, Madison, WI, New York, NY, Portland, OR, Santa Fe, NM, and Washington, DC. I have read 33 states actually allow this but in reality they really don’t you will still get hassled. Anyway, just thought I would put that out there.

Thoughts?

Summer of Love

IMG_5025 I had no idea I was going to come back from Kauai an engaged women, but here I am here writing about it now. Who knew if it would ever happen I am almost 40 after all! 🙂 I couldn’t be happier and I’m so lucky to have found someone who truly accepts and loves me for me. My craziness and all.  At the half mile mark of the Kalalau trail, Monday June 22nd, the second day of our trip; I said yes to a proposal on bended knee from the love of my life, my best friend Blake.

We were in Hawaii for a family trip to celebrate the graduation of Blake’s niece’s from high school. I have been to Maui once before but this was my first time in Kauai. I wasn’t sure what to expect as several people told me it was pretty laid back with not much to do. I think that’s exactly what I needed because I had a great time! Our first day was pretty chill. We met up with friends at Puka Dog my new favorite, then hung out at the beach for a bit. IMG_4814

Okay so let’s get back to Puka Dog. I’m not really into hotdogs much so I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. Well, I loved it! The way they cook the “dog” along with the garlic and my choice of relish which I chose coconut ; was amazing. We ate it twice it was so good. As I’m writing this I’m bummed that I can’t have one right now. Please bring this to California asap!

We had an awesome condo in Poipou which was our home for the week. I was afraid of spending way too much money in Hawaii so having a fully stocked kitchen was one of the great amenities they offered. Of course we went for some lunches and dinners out, but it was nice to have groceries at least for breakfast and snacks. Most of our evenings were pretty mellow as everything shut down pretty much around nine. We either played dominos with the family or spent time relaxing and watching movies. Honestly you get so tired from spending a lot of your day doing something in the sun, all you want to do at night is relax.

There were some activities we planned ahead of time but mostly we just wanted to do whatever we felt like doing and not plan too much out.  We were going to a theatrical luau one night and tubing the next day. I was really looking forward to both. The luau was at a Plantation near Poipou and about 1000 people were there. It was such a nice evening and perfect weather with just a little bit of drizzle, but we were under a huge tent anyway. The food was served buffet style along with the pig and all which I did not look at as they brought it outside for everyone to see. Yuck! They had a few jewelry and handbag vendors outside before dinner was served and I found the cutest couple of bags. Score! Oh and every single person at our table was from southern California. All and all it was a great time.

The tubing adventure through the old sugar canals was a pretty rad time except for the van ride up there. Due to lack of roads, let’s just say it wasn’t a good time for me. I did recover though and ended up having a lot of fun.IMG_5027Many days were spent lying around on the beach, snorkeling, hiking up the Napali coast and taking a few drives and taking in the beautiful scenery. We learned our way around as the island as it’s pretty small anyway, and had our little local market we would visit frequently. I think we got pretty comfortable with our surroundings, rooster and all and it wasn’t easy to leave.  I would definitely visit Kauai again I think it has a lot to offer. It will forever hold a special place in my heart for many reasons and I’m so beyond grateful to my new family that I was included in this family trip and was and always am treated like I’m one of them.

Happy new year! Am I too late?

Yeah yeah a little late I suppose but hey; it’s only the beginning of February so not too bad. I don’t make “resolutions” really because I think you’re setting yourself up for failure; but I do want to make some changes this year to better myself. In reality; I think of these things every day but feel like I just don’t have enough time. Or I forget. Either way. I always say I’m going to write more often but yet my last post was long ago. Like my boyfriend says; everyone procrastinate’s in their own way. This blog is something I love to do and something I just need to make the time for. Even if two people read this I’m happy. So whatever you have a passion for…DO IT.

I know my life isn’t over at 40 or anything, but since this is my last year in my 30’s; I want to really make it count and just not let time pass me by. Sometimes I feel like I don’t do much except for work and watch tv, but when I look at all my photos I realize I do have a life! Haha. For this year though I want it to be healthier, happier and explore new and exciting places and do or see things I haven’t seen before. It doesn’t even have to be traveling for example. Though traveling around would be awesome, it’s not reality as I have bills. I work every other weekend and oh I don’t make enough money. Sound familiar? There are so many things my city and state have to offer that I want to begin to take advantage of. I have lived here most of my life and there are so many places I haven’t been to and so many things I have yet to see. The timeless phrase “stop and smell the roses” is what comes to mind. It’s so true. Sometimes we just need to take a breather and realize how privileged we are and to really enjoy this one crazy life we have and make the most of it. Life doesn’t always turn out like you thought it would and maybe you didn’t follow your dreams but it’s never too late. You never know how long you will be on this earth. The sixteenth anniversary of my mom’s passing was on January 30th. She passed away when she was 50 years old. I miss her so much every single day. She was young and full of life. Always happy. She was someone who always lived her life to the fullest. Everyone loved her. I want to be more like her. She was most amazing woman I have ever known.  She motivates and encourages me. Now and forever.

Starting this month I challenge you to do one thing each month for the rest of the year that you haven’t done before. Maybe a hobby like snowboarding or something new like going to an art show. Or take a little road trip to explore new places. Do something out of your comfort zone. Who knows; you may enjoy it and find a love for something new. I started this last month with a few new things and I’m very excited to make the rest of the year a great one!

January was a super busy month. I wanted to start the year off right. New years day we started off by bowling with friends and that’s where my fun new year began! Among other things; the two new things I did was going to Huntington Library and the Freak show in Venice Beach, CA. Yes I watch the reality show on AMC and I really wanted to go.  So I did. My boyfriend suggested it, actually both things. He makes me happy. Anyway; I knew who everyone was there by first name and about their lives. Ha!  So back to the garden…The Huntington Gardens and Library were beautiful although there’s not many flowers blooming in January so another time of the year may be a better time to go. The admission is pretty, pretty, pretty steep. $23. Ok not a ludicrous amount but still. To look at plants and such just seems a little high. I mean there’s no rides or anything not even a tram j.k, but overall it was a great, nice, mellow relaxing type of experience.  Well except for all the walking. I was pretty sore for the rest of the week. Gosh I’m getting old. Let’s add workouts in for this year reminder to self. Ok back to my weekend. We went to Venice Beach the next day to see the freaks and the freaks, and more freaks. Did I say freaks? It was much smaller inside then it looks on tv and they have much less stuff there to look at than I thought but I still loved it. Hey it’s only $5 bucks so that’s a great deal anyway for a little freak action.  I have been to Venice a couple of times in my life and didn’t care for it really but actually had on great time on this day. Watching the kids skate at the skate park and adults roller dance was an entertaining experience. Especially the roller dance dudes.

I generally go to shows often especially to see Skapeche Mode and Slippers. Yeah my boyfriend is in both of those bands so there’s that. They both played last month, twice for Skapeche Mode, which I got to check out at The Echo in L.A. which I have never been too before. They also played at House Of Blues in Anaheim. Seems like they play there every couple of months or so. It always a great time there. Check them out if you haven’t already. The Slippers played at Alex’s bar. We also checked out the Depeche Mode tribute band Strangelove at Slidebar in Fullerton on an early Sunday night. It was a busy month for music!

It was beautiful sister Tiffany’s birthday as well as many of my friends. Kirsten had a rad Goth birthday party. Seemed like every day one of my friends had a birthday. So happy birthday all you January babies! My cousin Drea got married; I couldn’t make it but Congrats Drea and Joe. Oh and I got a haircut for a fresh start! Happy new year everyone. I hope you’ve had a great year so far and continued happiness for the rest of the year.

What’s the Skinny?

theponytales

You’re so skinny do you eat? Have you lost weight? You’re so thin. These are things that some of my friends and I hear on a pretty consistent basis; and no, we don’t take it as a compliment. Here’s why…

I don’t come up to you and say; you’re so fat. Do you ever stop eating? It’s the same thing. You may not look at it that way but it is. I would never say anything like that to anyone anyway as I’m just trying to make a point. If I’m asked a question by a close friend of course I would be honest but I’m not going to verbally attack you.  First of all I didn’t ask. I’m sure my friends and acquaintances don’t mean any harm, but the tones in people’s voice’s when they say it, sounds like they are in disgust like I’m a super super skinny…

Cali Christmas Part One

So my Cali Christmas journey hasn’t started off so well but things are looking up! Apparently, I missed my flight. Bad Pony! Yes I read the incorrect time. I arrived at the airport right as my flight was about to leave with 10 minutes to spare. Perfect you say? No! Can I just run to the gate? No! The guy informed me that all flights are sold out. Stand-by isn’t even an option. I would be waiting all day and night and most likely not get on a flight at all. It would also be more difficult since I have to change planes in Dallas. So after what seemed about 30 minutes which was probably about 5, he found something for me. Ok, he says, this is your ONLY option. 7:30 flight tonight straight to LAX, not OC. Ugh. That’s six and a half hours from now. I was just dropped off, no car. The change fee is $50. At least my flight was free. Thanks credit card points. It is what it is right? At least he was nice enough to omit the checked bag fee which would have set me back $25 after the $50 I just paid.
Do I have my friend come back and pick me up? Then I’ll have to try to secure a ride for later and I don’t know many people here so that’s probably not going to happen. Ok so I will just sit and wait. Six hours, six hours. I could have worked today! I’m already broke and I haven’t even gotten there yet! Oh well I caused this situation and there’s nothing I can do to change it. So…ya know. I guess I will just have to wait it out, grab some snacks and wait patiently for my flight.
I picked up the latest edition of Marie Claire with Angelina Jolie gracing the cover ever so beautifully, the latest edition of Playboy featuring Linndsey Lohan, fritos and a cherry coke. $18 later, as I’m walking back to my terminal to sit and wait. I came across a photo booth with ole Saint Nick himself! Yay Santa! Free photos! Well I think I may have a little time here so why not. At least I get something for free after just spending $75 I wouldn’t have spent otherwise. My turn! I plopped right down on Santa’s lap and told him what I wanted for Christmas. I didn’t really tell him but it sounded good. Anyway, sweet pics are finished. I got an email with a few pics and a printed photo as well and may I say the quality is excellent.
Fast forward to this moment. As I’m writing I’m sitting at the Asleep at the Wheel Road House bar in the Austin airport listening to the amazing Irish folk sounding band passing the time. 3 hours to go…..

Case of the Mondays? No way! This is the start to a great week!

So I don’t consider myself a “fashionista” but I do love fashion and I do my best. I have always had my own personal style and don’t always feel the need to follow certain trends. Everything does not look good on everyone people including myself.

Remember when leggings were huge? They’re still ok but let’s keep that bootie covered up! Anyway back to what I was saying….I always dress for my mood and I think music has a big influence on my personal style. I like many types of music and looks and I draw from all of them. Don’t focus your time on what’s trendy. Dress for you and create your own look. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to look cute!!!
