Summer of Love

IMG_5025 I had no idea I was going to come back from Kauai an engaged women, but here I am here writing about it now. Who knew if it would ever happen I am almost 40 after all! ūüôā I couldn’t be happier and I’m so lucky to have found someone who truly accepts and loves me for me. My craziness and all. ¬†At the half mile mark of the Kalalau trail, Monday June 22nd, the second day of our trip; I said yes to a proposal on bended knee from the love of my life, my best friend Blake.

We were in Hawaii for a family trip to celebrate the graduation of Blake’s niece’s from high school. I have been to Maui once before but this was my first time in Kauai. I wasn’t sure what to expect as several people told me it was pretty laid back with not much to do. I think that’s exactly what I needed because I had a great time! Our first day was pretty chill. We met up with friends at Puka Dog my new favorite, then hung out at the beach for a bit.¬†IMG_4814

Okay so let’s get back to Puka Dog. I’m not really into hotdogs much so I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. Well, I loved it! The way they cook the “dog” along with the garlic and my choice of relish which I chose coconut ; was amazing. We ate it twice it was so good. As I’m writing this I’m bummed that I can’t have one right now. Please bring this to California asap!

We had an awesome condo in Poipou which was our home for the week. I was afraid of spending way too much money in Hawaii so having a fully stocked kitchen was one of the great amenities they offered. Of course we went for some lunches and dinners out, but it was nice to have groceries at least for breakfast and snacks. Most of our evenings were pretty mellow as everything shut down pretty much around nine. We either played dominos with the family or spent time relaxing and watching movies. Honestly you get so tired from spending a lot of your day doing something in the sun, all you want to do at night is relax.

There were some activities we planned ahead of time but mostly we just wanted to do whatever we felt like doing and not plan too much out.  We were going to a theatrical luau one night and tubing the next day. I was really looking forward to both. The luau was at a Plantation near Poipou and about 1000 people were there. It was such a nice evening and perfect weather with just a little bit of drizzle, but we were under a huge tent anyway. The food was served buffet style along with the pig and all which I did not look at as they brought it outside for everyone to see. Yuck! They had a few jewelry and handbag vendors outside before dinner was served and I found the cutest couple of bags. Score! Oh and every single person at our table was from southern California. All and all it was a great time.

The tubing adventure through the old sugar canals was a pretty rad time except for the van ride up there. Due to lack of roads, let’s just say it wasn’t a good time for me. I did recover though and ended up having a lot of fun.IMG_5027Many days were spent lying around on the beach, snorkeling, hiking up the Napali coast and taking a few drives and taking in the beautiful scenery. We learned our way around as the island as it’s pretty small anyway, and had our little local market we would visit frequently. I think we got pretty comfortable with our surroundings, rooster and all and it wasn’t easy to leave. ¬†I would definitely visit Kauai again I think it has a lot to offer. It will forever hold a special place in my heart for many reasons and I’m so beyond grateful to my new family that I was included in this family trip and was and always am treated like I’m one of them.

I heard if you…well you heard wrong! -Top 10 beauty myths everyone knows about but still doesn’t seem to believe.

There are so many beauty myth’s that are passed down from¬†generation to generation that we hear, and are not exactly true; but for some reason we keep doing or believing these things. I guess it’s¬†because so many of us hear it time and time again, it would seem that it must be true right? Well wrong! Here are the top ten.

1. Shaving does not make you grow more hair, nor thicker or darker hair.-Okay so¬†think about it. How would that even be possible? You are cutting hair on your skin’s surface, not penetrating your skin and damaging the follicle. The hair appears thicker and darker because you are cutting the hair bluntly. Because it appears thicker and darker, that makes it also seem like there’s more hair growing as well.¬†

2.¬†You cannot shrink your pores-I know, I know, there’s a ton of ads promoting products that claim to do so. Well it’s not true. There’s no way to change the size of your pores. You can make them appear smaller to the eye for a temporary effect, but that about it. Pores do not actually shrink and products basically just fill them in like putty temporarily.¬†

3.¬†Dark circles are not caused by lack of sleep-That’s right! You know what you can do to prevent dark circles? NOTHING. It’s genetic. You’re either prone to them or you’re not. It’s that simple. Lack of sleep may cause a little puffiness, but again not the circles.

4.¬†Tweezing a Grey hair does not cause more to grow-It doesn’t I promise! It’s probably not a good idea to do it and it kinda hurts but it will not cause more growth. If you’re still worried then just trim it.¬†

5.¬†Chocolate and greasy foods to not cause breakouts-Nope, they don’t. You shouldn’t be eating those things anyway right? If you do though; instead of worrying about two things you’ll only have to worry about one. Your health.

6.¬†Split ends cannot be mended with products-Yes ladies it’s just marketing. The only way to mend those ends is to cut them off!

7.¬†Crossing your legs does not cause varicose or spider veins-Another problem that’s mostly hereditary too. Sorry ladies. Being on your feet all day can slightly cause them as well but it’s pretty much your genetics.

8.¬†Stress does not cause Grey hair-What?! Yes it’s true! Like most of our “problems,” Grey hair is cause by genetics and again of course.¬†

9. You cannot remove your cellulite-That’s what I said. You can use all the lotions and potions and laser treatments you want, but cellulite is here to stay. Fat or skinny most have ¬†women it and like everything else, it’s hereditary .So thank the one’s who you were before¬†you.¬†

10. DRINKING WATER DOES NOTHING FOR YOUR SKIN-This is the number one beauty myth of all. Even though it’s been said time and time again; people still believe this to be true. It’s not. Hey of course you should drink a lot of water, but getting good skin out of it will not happen. It fact your skin needs oil and that makes it healthy. Using sunscreen won’t hurt either.¬†

Comment? Questions? I’m a licensed esthetician¬†so just ask!

What’s the Skinny?

You’re so skinny do you eat? Have you lost weight? You’re so thin. These are things that some of my friends and I hear on a pretty consistent basis; and no, we don’t take it as a compliment. Here’s why…

I don’t come up to you and say; you’re so fat. Do you ever stop eating? It’s the same thing. You may not look at it that way but it is. I would never say anything like that to anyone anyway as I’m just trying to make a point. If I’m asked a question by a close friend of course I would be honest but I’m not going to verbally attack you. ¬†First of all I didn’t ask. I’m sure my friends and acquaintances don’t mean any harm, but the tones in people’s voice’s when they say it, sounds like they are in disgust like I’m a super super skinny twig who’s about to keel over. I’m not. I have a small frame and yes I do eat. I have been the same size since high school. Am I supposed to gain weight because I’m older now? I’m not doing anything different and have never been on a diet. It’s just the way my body is.¬†

This has bothered me for a while now and I get offended every time I hear it, but I just smile and blow it off like I don’t care because I don’t want to make a big thing about it. Recently though I have had a couple of my friends on Facebook talk about this and saw something else written about this very subject so I just felt like I had to comment on it.

It’s also a little bit more than saying you’re so skinny. That’s just the beginning. When it starts getting is really offensive is when people start saying negative and mean comments about being thin. The best comment is “real women have curves.” Okay so I’m not a REAL women because I have a small frame and I’m thin? Well fuck you! Well I am a real women and I do have curves. Even if a women doesn’t, and she has a small chest and flat butt; well she was born that way. Sorry she didn’t get plastic surgery. I guess she’s not a real women. Look I want women to be proud of who they are and comfortable in their bodies. All women. Everyone is built differently and whatever is healthy for your body is the way to go. ¬†I just feel like we are celebrating being overweight in a way sometimes. Like I should feel bad because I’m not, if that makes sense. ¬†Just because the average population in the US is overweight and that’s the norm, then that means it’s okay. Well it’s not. That’s a whole other subject though. Again what I really wanted to convey here is, to please just understand that because you may not think these are negative comments, and you are not purposely trying to hurt us, it still does. We are ALL real women and should always support each other.¬†
